Joga Bonito part 1

Her's a set of a few dry ones from the year round competition held in
NIT-W named Joga.

1. Excerpt from History of Mathematics by Howard Eves: “Aryabhatta called it the ardha-jya (half-chord) and jya-ardha(chord-half), and then abbreviated the term by simply using jya(chord). From jya the Arabs phonetically derived jiba, which, following the Arabic practice of omitting vowels was written as jb. Now jiba is a meaningless word in Arabic. Later writers who came across jb as an abbreviation changed it to jaib, which means ‘cove’ or ‘bay’ in Arabic. When the word was translated into Latin from Arabic, it was replaced by its Latin equivalent Y meaning a cove or a bay, from whence came our present word X.”. This was instrumental in the discovery of a very important branch of mathematics. Identify X.

Ans- Sine from Trignometry.. In the quiz i had also guessed algebra..not right..

2. While studying the evolution of the internet, two names come to mind immediately. X was founded by Shawn, an 18 year old Northeastern University freshman after seeing his frustrated roommate trying to download from mp3.com. Shawn began to write a code for a real-time system that would locate music files on the hard drives of other users on the Internet. He passed it on to thirty people for testing and a few days later, it had been downloaded by 15,000 people. He dropped out of college to pursue this and within a year X had thirty two million users, and was adding a million a week. The second is Y, which used the peer-to-peer technology, whose servers were in Denmark, the software was in Estonia and the web site had an Australian registration. When the heat got turned on, the people behind Y added more layers to confuse anyone trying to track them. The interface was turned over to a company called Sharman Networks, formed days earlier on the Pacific island of Vanuatu. Sharman had no employees, all were contracted through the LEF Interactive in Sydney. Identify X and Y.

Ans- Napster and Kazaa

3. This product X of a type of item Y was invented by a man named Mikhail, who began his career as a designer of Y while recovering from an injury in a hospital. The main advantages of X are its simple design, fairly compact size and adaptation to mass production. It is inexpensive to manufacture, and easy to clean and maintain; its ruggedness and reliability are legendary. X remains the most widely used product of its type in the world - so much so that more units of X have been produced than all others of type Y combined. The World Bank estimates that 75 million units of X are available worldwide. In some countries, prices for X are very low; in Somalia, Rwanda, Mozambique, Congo and Ethiopia, prices are $30–$125 per unit, and prices have fallen in the last few decades due to mass counterfeiting. It was found that, in a small town in Kenya in 1986, a single unit cost fifteen cows but that in 2005, the price was down to four cows indicating that supply was "immense". Identify X.

Ans - AK - 47

4. The usually accepted first known mention of X is in code in a poem called
‘Flen flyys’ in a mixture of Latin and English composed some time before 1500 as ‘non sunt in coeli, quia fvccant vvivys of hel’, accusing some Church personnel of misbehaving. Myths claimed X came from Irish law: if a couple were caught committing adultery, they’d be punished For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge in the Nude. In reality though, while the French, Catalan, Spanish, Italian and Romanian versions of X come from their earlier Latin counterpart, the English probably owe their version to the Germanic folk (Germans, Dutch, Norwegians, Swedes). In the 20th century, X has been put to use by people like D.H Lawrence (in his novel “Lady Chatterley’s lover), and James Joyce (in his famous novel Ulysses, he penned a pun-filled poem ‘If you see Kay’) in the 20s. Later still, in the 70s, popular features of X were in MASH, probably the first movie to do so, and by John Lennon, in his song ‘Working Class Hero’. The 21st century has seen a film called X, released in 2005. Identify X.

Ans- FUCK.. been asked b4

5. First described in 1977, X is an omnipresent form of energy can be harnessed by those with the ability. It is described "an energy field created by all living things [that] surrounds us, penetrates us, [and] binds the galaxy together.” X allows users to perform a variety of supernatural feats and also can amplify certain physical traits, such as speed and reflexes; these abilities can vary from user to user and can be improved through training. While the X can be used for good, it has a dark side that, when pursued, imbues users with hatred, aggression, and malevolence. Identify X.

Ans- The Force.. from star wars ..
